You can submit an expression of interest for the Global Talent Independent program if you think you can satisfy all the requirements. The contact form refers your application to Global talent officers based around the world. They will then assess your application and let you know the outcome of your expression of interest in around 2-4 weeks.
The Expression of interest form is free. In this way, the department is encouraging deserving candidates to apply for this program. This is in stark difference to the traditional 189/190 visa applications where the candidate has spent $1000+ just for submitting an expression of interest.
If you are planning to make an application soon, get a Global Talent Consultation to get professional help on achieving the Global Talent Visa. You can also check your likelihood of a UID using the eligibility calculator.
Filling the Form
Make sure you select the first option while submitting your Expression of Interest. Options 2 and 3 have moved to Immiaccount (more on that later).
The rest of the information in the first section of the form is Personal information. You will also need to have a scanned copy of your passport.
Evidence of Global Talent
This is the most important part of your application. You need to have an up-to date resume before you can fill this out.
We will go through the parts of the form one by one.
- Industry/Sector – It falls under one of the seven sectors identified by the Australian government. You should have contributed to this field through your career.
- Occupation – Current occupation
- Current Annual Salary
- PhD or Masters – Simple Yes or No
- Qualifications – Highest achieved qualification
- Nominator – You need to have an Australian nominator for this program. It’s easier to achieve if you work for a multinational organization with a presence in Australia, interact with prominent Australians in your fields who’d be willing to nominate you.
- Details of Achievements – Submit a brief paragraph in 300-750 characters outlining prominence in your selected sector. Use an overview for your achievements and how you’ve contributed to the field. You can go into specifics using evidence documents.
- Attachment Evidence Documents – Start with your CV/Resume and upload all the supporting documents which will help your case. Submit any media features, publications, academic degrees and achievements, recommendation letters here.
Completing the Form
This is all the information the department needs from you to assess the application. Think of it like applying for College admission. You need to sell yourself to the Department by enlisting all of your achievements.
After Submission
The department usually takes 1-4 weeks to assess your EOI. There can be three outcomes:
- Your application delights the Talent officer, and you receive a unique identifier
- The officer emails asking for more information about your achievements. These can include recommendation letters, proof of pay and documents specific to your application. More on this later.
- A rejection email if the officer does not think you qualify

Thank you very much for your sharing, I’m preparing documents to apply for this visa, but I have a few concerns when logging EOI, Could you please advise me:
1. Is it necessary/recommended to attach the reference letter of the nominator in EOI?
2. Should we write and attached a cover letter to explain in detail our achievements; or the short description in the form (700 characters) should be enough?
Really appreciate for your help.
June 22, 2020
Dear Wudit,
Thank you for your detailed answer.
It’ll take some time to complete those documents, and could be until July. I heard that they may adjust the number of granted applicants, as well as the requirement from July 1st, is it correct? So should we apply before those changes may happen?
Thank you again for your help.
June 22, 2020
The number of candidates been granted is not close to their limits. On an average, about 150-200 people got a grant per month. Since November, 7 months makes it about 1400 grants. I think you can take your time with these documents to have a decision ready application without worrying about the total intake.

Hi,
Many thanks for such informative details.
Currently, I am a PhD student in Australia and I will submit my thesis by next August this year.
My field is Data Stream Mining which is in data science (as requested).
Totally, I have seven papers, this year I have published three papers in Q1 -Q2 Journals in Data Science, Top Journals such as “Knowledge-Based Systems – Elsevier”.
In addition, I am working as a sessional for the last two years.
1. Do you think I have a chance to get an invitation via GIT ?.
2. You mentioned I will receive a rejection email if the officer does not think I am qualified, So does that affect my record? will I be able to apply again or through other types of Visa?
Really appreciated your help.
Regards, Sam.

Dear Wudit,
Your prompt reply is highly appreciated indeed.
1. I totally agree with you on this point, however, For PhD option, if you select NO, then you will get a question “Are you currently studying a PhD and will submit your thesis in the next 6 months?”, f you said Yes they will ask you”Please attach formal evidence that you will submit your PhD thesis in the next six months (this should include a letter from your university detailing the submission date of your thesis, including confirmation of enrolment and the title of your thesis).” and of course, I have such a letter from the Uni and my Supervisor. However, I will try to find if there is candidates have submitted EOI six months before their final thesis submission.
2. Another question please, regarding the question of Details of Achievements, do you have a sample answer for this question, it’s a critical question and I am not pretty sure in the way of writing the answer.
Once again, Many thanks for your kind help.
Regards, Sam
August 28, 2020
Hi guys,
I think a finished PhD is not necessary. I know at least 3 guys received their UID before submitting the final thesis.
July 3, 2020
Hi,
First of all thanks for putting all this information together. Really helps!
I graduated from an Australian University with a 3.9 GPA (Out of 4) with a Master’s in IT with a specialization in AI(Data Science). I was working as a Research Assistant in the same field. I now have been working in the Data Science field for the past 1.5 years. I also teach data science as a casual at the university. I have one research paper and I have my professor and my organization who is ready to nominate me. I do satisfy the salary requirement too.
1. Do you think I have a chance for getting GTI?
2. I don’t have a Ph.D. or a lot of research papers, but I can get a letter of recommendation about my work in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning from my professors and my past companies. Does that help?
July 3, 2020
Thanks for your quick reply. That helps.
Also, another question probably pretty basic, in the current annual salary, did you include super and everything or just the base salary?
Thanks
July 3, 2020
The salary threshold is just for the base salary
July 3, 2020
Cool thanks for the clarification.
July 29, 2020
Hello,
Your blog seems useful and I’m glad you reply to all the questions.
I have a question too.
1. I have bachelors in architecture and masters in urban planning and engineering. I completed my masters in February 2016. I started my PhD in architecture in 2018 March. PhD is a 3 years program but I will complete my PhD in August 2021. My degree got delayed due to the pandemic. My PhD research topic is on energy conservation and passive measures to reduce energy consumption in buildings. My PhD topic is relevant to the target sector ‘energy and mining’ but I am not sure whether i am eligible or not considering the target groups. P.S. I have one publication and the second publication is submitted. Moreover, I have been awarded with fully funded scholarship for higher education abroad from my country’s government on the basis of my academic excellence. I am gold medalist and highest achiever. I am a university lecturer in my homeland but currently on leave due to PhD.
Please let me know if I am eligible to apply for GTI?
July 29, 2020
That’s a good profile for this visa. I’m not sure the target sector for your Degree, but if you are in one of them, go for it. Don’t apply at least until you finish your PhD though.

Dear Udit
Good Day, hope you are doing well.
I have now submitted my 858 VISA subclass application which is progressing. I have decided to declare my spouse in the application but not included her in the migration application as an applicant because of current Travel restrictions in/out of Australia and globally and also, since she is currently enrolled in education at her home country.
She currently holds no Australian VISA.
To the best of my knowledge, I can not include her in 858, as I can not travel out of Australia for VISA decision due to COVID and can not include her in 124, as I can not go out of Australia for VISA decision due to COVID.
Hence, please advise;
1- What are the possible pathways of applying for her spouse VISA after/before the decision of my this current 858 application ?
2- Will she get the benefit of fast track processing of Global Talent program (Distinguished Talent visa) when I later apply for her after my decision? (Someone advised, that If I apply for her later in future for spouse VISA, she will be considered under GTI program of DTV.)
Thank You
Best Regards
A Patel

Hello,
I have submitted my Phd thesis for marking and currently on bridging visa A. I have also gained a permanent job in my field. Can I put in my expression of interest for GIT whiles waiting for the substantive visa?
July 14, 2020
You can definitely apply for the EOI, but don’t apply for the Visa until you get on a substantiative visa.
July 30, 2020
Hi,
Thank you very much for all these information.
I have completed my masters in Science (Biotechnology) in 2019 from a Australian university (GPA- 3.7/4.0)and currently I’m enrolled for my PhD with a full scholarship. My masters degree composed of a research component and it was focused on Agricultural biotechnology. My PhD also in the same field. I have two publications from my bachelors research and I won the best presenter award in an international conference. Also, I won the gold medal for my academic excellence from my bachelors (BSc Agriculture) and recruited as a temporary lecturer in the same university I completed my first degree.
1. Do you think I have a chance for getting GTI?
2. Since I’m not currently employed, how can I put a value for my current salary?
July 30, 2020
Hey there,
Look the Agtech sector is under-utilized. You have a good chance to get it once you are done with your PhD
August 4, 2020
Hi,
Thank you for the explanations.
I Submitted EOI in mid June. I mentioned the nominator’s details but did not include a recommendation letter from the nominator. Will this be a reason to delay EOI processing? However, I did submit proof of achievements. I completed my PhD in beginning of 2020 and now working as a postdoc in Australia.
What should I do?
Thank you

August 27, 2020
Hi,
I’ve researched this visa and seem to only find examples of applicants within the research side of things. My background is in technology sales for a global market leader in HR and finance solutions. Whilst I may not have many years in this industry, I have been instrumental to the success of the ANZ sales function. I’ve received numerous awards as an individual contributor, manager and most recently recognised globally as part of the international sales team of the year. The ANZ business is looking for me to relocate into the field sales team in Australia but finding the existing visa options difficult as it would require the business to wait quite a while for the visa to come through. For candidates such as myself, does this background align with this program? If so, is there a required years of experience in the industry or total years of sales experience overall? I should have no issues getting recommendation letter from anyone in our sales leadership team including our ANZ vice president of sales to provide evidence to how I have transformed the sales function, increased profitability and how my team and I are a foundation to continue to be the leading market in APJ. Any advice to strengthen my application would be greatly appreciated.
August 27, 2020
Hey there,
That’s just the nature of the candidates that the dept is looking for. You can try applying within the ICT function and talk about your Technical sales experience. Attach relevant articles and proof, and see how the dept goes with it.

Hi Wudit
Thank you for the very informative content!
I would like to know if I am eligible for this visa. Please see my info below:
· I am a 31 year old South African Engineer.
· I have three years’ experience as an Electrical Engineer at a power utility
· I was awarded my Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering (Cum Laude) in December 2013.
· I was awarded my Ph.D in Electrical Engineering in December 2019. I completed my PhD in two years whilst lecturing. My specialty is in the grid-integration of large-scale renewable energy.
· I have 8 publications to my name, with four more pending. One of these is in a high impact factor journal, with another currently under review.
· I have received two awards from international conferences – one in Tunisia and one in Perth, Australia. One was for best paper, the other for best presentation.
I would very much appreciate an indication as to my chances of securing this visa
August 28, 2020
Hey Matt,
Thanks for that. You have a good profile for this Visa, with your PhD, work in the Power sector. I encourage you to apply.
August 29, 2020
Thank you for the response :). Very much appreciated
October 26, 2020

Hi.
– I completed my PhD in Computer Science, in Japan, 2019.
– I have 7 international conference papers and 1 journal paper (rank Q1).
– I have two patents filed in Japan (has not been published).
– I have 1.5 years working as a data scientist in Japan.
Do you think I have a chance to secure GTI visa as a recent PhD graduate?
Thank you.
September 6, 2020
I want to add that my current gross salary in Japan is about 78,000AUD/year.
September 6, 2020
Hey there,
You seem to have a strong profile for this Visa. As long as you are in one of the target sectors, and have a prominent Australian nominator, encourage you to submit the EOI
September 6, 2020
Hi Wudit,
Thank you for your comment.
I don’t have a nominator at this moment. Is it a good idea to use ACS as the nominator?
September 6, 2020
Yes you can use them. But they only nominate you if you are in the ICT sector and have received a UID.
September 6, 2020
Thank you very much.
December 21, 2020
Hi
I have completed my PhD in microelectronics in Universiti Teknologi Malaysia in August 2017.
I had grant student award and have published 4 papers (two ISI and one Scopus) and a book chapter.
I have worked as electronic training course instructor from 2017 to 2018 and been on maternity leave and not working since 2018 until now.
Do I have a chance for GTI?
Do I need nominator recommendations letter to submit EOI?
September 10, 2020
Hi Wudit
Thank you for your sharing. I am a PhD student. My Uni had provided a document to certify that I would submit my thesis within 6 months. My field is energy (oil and gas). I had 4 drafted papers from my PhD project and 4 papers published during my master period (I was the second author, my supervisor was the first. One paper was in a top journal). Plus I am a fellow of a Australian research hub, and was a visiting scholar in my current uni for 1 year, and am holding the scholarship offered by Australian government. My nominator is a professor of my uni, but I didn’t attach the recommendation letter. Do you think I have the chance to get it.
I have submitted my eoi over two weeks ago. If they reject me, would they send me an email to let me know? Thanks!
September 14, 2020
Hi,
I have Ph.D. in Energy from Australia in 2019. I have many publications in Top ranked journal.
I don’t have job now, what can I write in the section of salary in Application?

September 20, 2020
Hello Wudit,
I have recently received UID for GTI application and lodged the visa application last week. Currently, I am waiting for the decision.
Based on your experience, can you please tell what’s the probability of getting the visa approved when I already have UID (assuming health assessment and police certificates are in order)? Thanks so much.
September 20, 2020
According to the report 99.5% of UIDs get a Visa grant. I think circumstances like a failed medical test are always grounds for refusal.
September 22, 2020
Dear Wudit,
I am a Bangladeshi and I obtained my PhD degree from School of Medicine, Griffith University, Australia in 2018 and Master degree from Seoul National University, South Korea in 2012. Currently I am a Senior Lecturer in the department of Pharmacy, Bangladesh University, Bangladesh. I have 17 international publications and I gave oral presentation in various international scientific conference in Australia, USA etc.
My PhD supervisor can be my nominator.
Could you please give me any idea about my chance to be successful in this process?
Thanks in advance.
Wahab
September 22, 2020
Encourage you to apply.
September 28, 2020
Thanks for posting this information. 2 questions please:
1. Do you need to have a nominator before submitting the EOI? Does it impact the EOI process? Reading the Australian Computing Society guidelines they will nominate people, but say the EOI needs to be in place first.
2. I have worked as a lead in multiple global roles at Cisco systems during a 13 year period, and am in a senior role at Microsoft now. I have 15+ years of global industry leadership, working in standards groups in energy, have presented at multiple conferences all over the world, have authored multiple white papers and written for journals and magazines. I am also a published book author. In addition I have 30+ letters of recommendation on my global impact from customers, global industrial vendors and senior Cisco colleagues. I currently earn over $400,000 AUD. Does this sound like a profile for GTI? I am recognised for expertise in digital technology for oil and gas, power utility use cases and industrial cyber security. Thanks, Rik
September 28, 2020
Hey Rik. Your profile makes you well suited towards this program. I suggest you book a consultation with Ashton Legal (https://theglobaltalentvisa.com.au/global-talent-consultation/). Or you can even ask them for a free profile review (https://theglobaltalentvisa.com.au/free-global-talent-profile-review/) by submitting this form.
1. They can help you find a nominator before you lodge an EOI for the process. It always helps to have a complete application at EOI stage.
2. Your definitely suited to the GTI program.
Good luck!
October 1, 2020
Dear Wudit,
Hope you are well and thanks for sharing this useful information.
I obtained my Ph.D. in 2017-07 and now I am a postdoc at UWA commenced in 2018-2. I am going to apply for this visa but the only problem is that my current salary is about 100K which is much lower than the threshold. So am I eligible for applying for this visa and could you please give me any idea to increase the chance to be successful in this process?
Many thanks~
October 1, 2020
Thanks Ruobing! You can get a consultation with Ashton Legal to go ahead with your application.
October 1, 2020
Hi Peter, current earning is only an indicator about your earning potential, we will work with you to demonstrate to the delegate that you do have the potential to meet the salary threshold of AU$153,600.
October 4, 2020
Hi,
Thank so much for all the information that you provide in the blog, it is really helpful.
I have a BSc in Food Science and Technology and currently I’m in my last year of PhD in Agricultural sciences, for my background I think I can fit in AgTech. I have two published papers in Q1 journals and 3 more ready to publish in the coming months, also I am currently doing an internship in the University of Melbourne and my Supervisor from Unimelb is going to be my nominator.
I plan to submit the EOI in January when I have 6 month left to submit my thesis but I have to do it from offshore since I have to come back to my country in november to finish my thesis.
Do you think I have good chances on getting an invitation for the GTI program?
Thank you so much in advance!
Regards,
Nuria
October 4, 2020
Hey Nuria. I think you have a good chance of receiving UID. Please use https://theglobaltalentvisa.com.au/free-global-talent-profile-review/ to get a review from Ashton Legal
October 4, 2020
FoodTech although not specifically names as one of the seven targeted sectors, it is one that has successfully received UI in the past, and yes, AgTech is certainly one of the targeted sectors.
October 5, 2020
Thank you so much for your answer and for the link! 🙂
I hope that I can receive the UID when I send my EOI and that it does not affect the fact that it is from offshore.
October 5, 2020
Thanks for your comment! 🙂
I hope that the immigration officer see that my profile fit perfectly in AgTech and decide to send me the UID.
October 7, 2020
Do you need to have a nominator before submitting the EOI?
Can you put ACS in the EOI itself?
Reading the Australian Computing Society guidelines they will nominate people only if they have UID.
October 18, 2020
Hi wudit,
I am doing my PhD from Melbourne and it’s my 2nd year in the ICT field. Am I eligible for GTI visa programme?

November 2, 2020
Hi,
I’m a current PhD student in Melbourne. I submit in 2 months. My field of research is literary and cultural studies. Do I fit in any of the target sectors? Is it possible for me to apply for the Global Talent Visa? Any help is much appreciated. Thank you.
Best,
Ellie
November 2, 2020
Unfortunately, if it does not fall within the targeted sectors, you won’t be able to apply under the Global Talent Visa programme. In your case, I don’t think literary and cultural studies would be able to come under the GTIP.
November 2, 2020
Hi I work as entomologist under control of Agricultural insect pest and weed. do you think it fits in Agtech field
November 3, 2020
Angela, it is possible, I am sure there is a technology component to it; so please focus on that.
November 3, 2020
Hello. I have a degree in B.S. Computer Engineering. I have been working in an IT field since then and worked as Systems Engineer, Technical Systems Consultant, IT Manager. I have received awards also from those multi-national companies I have worked with. Majority of the companies I have worked with were IT companies and 2 were financial firms. Currently, I am studying in Australia taking up Diploma in Security to upskill, as I would like to shift to Cybersecurity. I am also working currently as a part-time Systems Engineer here in Australia. Am I eligible fro GTI application? Thanks a lot.
November 3, 2020
Elle, looks good, I think you are likely to be eligible under the GTIP. I suggest that you book a consultation for detailed assessment.
November 23, 2020
Am I eligible to apply for the Global Talent Visa Program with the below credentials?
I have completed my PhD in 2017 from Agriculture and Food Sciences School, University of Queensland, Australia under John-Allright Fellowship from the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR), a prestigious and very competitive fellowship scheme. My thesis consisted of four journal papers; all of the papers have published in reputed international journals.
Before my PhD program, I worked as a researcher in two ACIAR projects (‘Expanding the area for Rabi-season cropping in southern Bangladesh’ visit: http://aciar.gov.au/project/lwr/2005/146 and ‘Developing multi-scale climate change adaptation strategies for farming communities in Cambodia, Laos, Bangladesh and India’, visit: http://aciar.gov.au/project/lwr/2008/019). I have also several international publications from these projects and from my currant and earlier employments.
My PhD advisor (Rob Cramb, Honorary Professor of Agricultural Development in the School of Agriculture and Food Sciences at The University of Queensland, Australia) or the project director from the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), Australia of these projects will be my nominator.
Now I am in Bangladesh. From April 2017, I am working with the Mott MacDonald, Bangladesh as a ‘Monitoring and Evaluation Expert’ in Blue Gold Program (BGP) which is a collaboration program between the Government of the Netherlands and the Government of Bangladesh. This project aims to reduce poverty of the people in the coastal areas by the enhanced productivity of crops, and increasing incomes of farming communities through participatory water management, improved agriculture technologies and marketing systems.

Hey there,
I m Sana from Japan, a senior research fellow in the Medtech field. I have fulfilled most of the conditions required for GTI application including salary & experience. However, I don’t have a Nominator for my application process. Is it strong enough to use a permanent resident individual in the same field as a nominator? Is there any professional body for the MedTech field, like ACS?
And is there any example format to write Details of Achievements?
Appreciate your kind response.
December 8, 2020
Hi
I was wondering if obtaining a UID means the applicant will be awarded a visa.
Regards
Amir
December 9, 2020
Hey Amir! From the data, it appears that 99.5% of the people getting a UID do get the visa. Welcome you to join the community discussing the visa, jobs and startups in Australia.

Hello and thanks for your prompt reply
My field of study is Food technology; I did masters at university of Melbourne in collaboration with CSIRO (2013) and PhD at USM in August 2018 (A university in Malaysia which is ranked 142th globally based on QS ranking). I have published 11 papers which 9 of them are in Q1 journals. I was wondering whether Agtech is a suitable target sector for me. Based on the description provided by the department of home affairs they are looking for agricultural scientists and engineers who can bring network connectivity (IOT) and drones to the farms. Have they specifically mentioned Food tech as a suitable skillset? If so would be grateful if you could share the link.
Many thanks

March 13, 2021
Hi,
I had got a master’s degree with specialization in computer science about 10 years ago, I have strong technical expertise and more than 10 years experience in FinTech sector , now I’m a technical lead at an internationally repulated bank in the world, I led global teams designed and developed a couple of trading system for banks, but may salary is not meet the threshold yet(a bit lower than the threshold ), if I can get a nominator and recommendation letter, to what extent I can get the GTI? Thanks a lot
