Global Talent Interview: Sunpreet

Global Talent Interview: Sunpreet

We have Sunpreet answering questions for prospective GTI Candidates. Sunpreet received the GTI Visa in July, 2020. He is in the Cyber Security field and is working on his PhD in a Sydney based University.

I was preparing to go for the General Skilled Migration (GSM) program, such as, 189, 190. In February 2020, I had 90 points for 189. While I was waiting for an invitation to apply under GSM, I stumbled across a newsletter for the Global Talent Independent (GTI) Visa, available on the immigration department’s website, thus, I started exploring this path. Subsequently, I also did a decent amount of reading on ExpatForum and other sources.
I started my process in the end of May through an Expression of Interest (EOI); I received my final invite (UID) in the end of June and I had my visa granted a month after (in July end).
I joined the School of Engineering in a Sydney based University as a Ph.D. Candidate in January 2019. My Ph.D. research area is focused on image watermarking, which has many applications in maintaining the media integrity and falls directly under cyber security and copyright protection. Prior to this, I finished my Master of Philosophy (MPhil.) Studies in image processing at the same university. Over the course of my MPhil. and ongoing Ph.D. studies, I have published my findings in 7 peer reviewed IEEE indexed Journals and conferences of both national and international standards. I am a recipient of the RTP Stipend Postgraduate Research Award scholarship, awarded to high performing research candidates .In the past, I have attained a Master of Science (MSc.) in Mobile and Satellite Communication and a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Computer Systems Engineering from a London based University. They presented me with the Rohde and Schwarz Industrial Award for the Most Outstanding MSc Student in Microwave and Optical Fiber Communications.
This process requires patience and a lot of reading. Foremost, educate yourself about the GTI visa process and its requirements. Second, if there is a merit give it a shot and last, if you know you have it in you, you will get it. So self belief is vital, as you are the best person to explain your work and its relevance. All the best.
